Thefts target catalytic converters

Six catalytic converters have been reported stolen in Lake City so far this year, according to the Lake City Police Department.

Part of the exhaust system of some automobiles, the devices convert some pollutants and toxins in engine exhaust into less harmful substances. Thieves target converters because they can be sold for the precious metals inside.

Lake City Police Sgt. Bill Weist said catalytic converter thefts are “happening all over; the larger cities are having real trouble with them.”
