Captain Richard E. Meyer Obituary

Captain Richard E. Meyer was born on a small farm near Oak Center.  His parents, Jacob and Gladys Meyer and his two older brothers, Mervil and Marvin, predeceased Capt. Meyer.          He is survived by his wife, Linda Meyer; sons, Richard and Robert Meyer; daughter, Lyn Holmes; stepdaughters, Nicole Galletta and Michelle Workman; and a total of 10 grandchildren.  
    After graduating from Lincoln High School in 1953 he attended the University of Minnesota.  He then joined the Naval Aviation Cadet Program to pursue his career as a naval officer and naval aviator.  He received his Navy wings and commission as a naval officer in April 1957.  Capt. Meyer served for 25 years as a naval aviator flying off Essex Class aircraft carriers in most of the oceans of the world.  Most of his assignments were served on the East Coast of Norfolk, Va., Key West, Fla., and Washington, D.C.  He was assigned as commanding officer of the Air Anti-Submarine Squadron-21 in San Diego, Calif. near the end of the Viet Nam War.  From there he returned to Washington, D.C. where he attended National War College and served a final tour of duty in the Pentagon before his retirement in July 1980.  
    Following his retirement from the Navy he started a second career in Real Estate in Northern Virginia where he remained active until his “second retirement” in 2008.  Captain and Mrs. Meyer and most of their family have been Northern Virginia residents for many years.

    A gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday, June 14, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, Va.
