Elizabeth "Betty" Schmidt Obituary

Elizabeth A. “Betty” (Roemer) Schmidt, 88, a lifelong resident of the Wabasha area, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2017 at St. Elizabeth’s Nursing Home in Wabasha.  
    She was born May 8, 1928 in Oakwood Township of Wabasha County, to Ernest and Catherine (Marx) Klein.  She was a graduate of St. Felix High School in Wabasha.  She married Richard “Bud” Roemer May 12, 1948 at St. Felix Catholic Church.  Together they farmed on Pepin Hill, rural Wabasha.  Bud died Sept. 27, 1972.  She later married Roland Schmidt May 19, 1979 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Hope, Minn.  They made their home in rural Wabasha on the Roemer farm.  Roland died April 6, 2008.
    Betty was a life member of St. Felix Catholic Church and its Council of Catholic Women.  She was also a member of the National Catholic Order of Women Foresters and the Wabasha American Legion Auxiliary.  She was a member of the Pepin Hill Farmers Club and the Pepin Hill Women’s Club as well.  Betty loved growing flowers in her many gardens at her home.  She also enjoyed feeding the birds, quilting, cross stitching, and cooking.  Her greatest joy was spending time with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Betty was a very kind, gracious and grateful person.  She will be missed dearly by her family and her many friends.
    She is survived by her children and their spouses, Kathleen (Roger) Edwards of Dumfries, Shirley (Donald) Sylvester, Wabasha, Judy (Peter) Loechler, Wabasha, Barbara (Peter) Mathias, Lake City, Mary Guertin, Burnsville, Allan (Elaine) Roemer, Wabasha, Janice (David) Evers, Wabasha and Joseph (Jane) Roemer, Wabasha; step-son, Roland (Charlene) Schmidt, Auburn, Calif.; step-daughter, Kristine (Rance) Ragan, Crystal, Minn.; 26 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Doreen Stamschror, Wabasha, Margaret (Dennis) Speedling, Wabasha, Helen Schilz, Minneapolis; brother and sister-in-law, Gerald (Ruth) Klein, Wabasha; and nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Bud and Roland, brother, Robert Klein, and sister, Anita Norton.
    A funeral mass will be offered on Friday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha with the Rev. Fr. James Russell officiating.  Interment will follow at St. Felix Cemetery.  Family and friends may call at the Abbott Funeral Home in Wabasha on Thursday, Jan. 19, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at which time there will be a prayer service and they may call at the church on Friday one hour before the mass.  Memorials are preferred to St. Elizabeth’s Community Development Foundation, 1200 5th Grant Blvd. W., Wabasha, MN  55981.
