Halvorson: Depression food was simple but ample
During the depression everyone was struggling to make ends meet.
When I look back our meals were pretty simple. We ate lots of bread and milk. Mom’s home baked bread and milk from the neighbor’s cow.
We loved bread soaked in warm milk sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon.
Rice was another staple especially for dessert made with lots of cream, sugar and vanilla.
On cold days mom made homemade potato soup, her own version. I never managed to duplicate it.
