Old Curmudgeon - 9-14-17

The big yellow school bus passing the Old Curmudgeon’s window sent his mind reeling back to the one-room school that was a mile south of his childhood home in Dodge County. Yes, it was uphill both ways! One half of the mile was a township road and the other half was a county road.

He started the first grade at the age of five (no kindergarten in those early days, and no school bus until high school in West Concord).

He was one of only two graduates from that grade school in 1946. No backpack, no computer, no cell-phone, only a lunch pail.
