Shock and frustration follow schoolhouse vandalism

Connie and Richard Schumann were taking some friends on a tour of the countryside last Friday when they made an unpleasant discovery.

Vandals had smashed windows and scribbled graffiti in an old one-room school building they own and have worked to preserve over the years.

Wheelan School, Wabasha County District 22, sits on a gravel stretch of Wabasha County Road 9 south of Lake City.

Students attended the school from 1868 until 1965. Richard believes the current school building dates to about the 1880s.
