It’s a myth that suicide rates spike during the holiday season, according to experts, but the truth is that overall suicide rates in the United States are up over the last few decades.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 48,000 people committed suicide in 2021, a 36% increase from the 2000 total. U.S. population growth over that period was only about 17 percent, according to census data. Millions more attempted, planned, or thought about suicide.
