Shirley Sommerfield obituary

Shirley Virginia Sommerfield, age 81, passed away at home on March 21, 2025 surrounded by family, after a two year battle with cancer.
She was born on October 15, 1943 in Fountain City, Wis. to Lyle Sr. and Sarah Stewart. She moved to Red Wing, Minn. when she was one year old and grew up in the Cannon Bottoms. She was the first member of her family to graduate high school in 1962 from Red Wing High School. She met the love of her life, David Sommerfield in the winter of 1962, and they married on August 15, 1964 in Red Wing. They have been married for over 60 years. Shirley worked at Red Wing Shoe Co. for 41 years until she retired. After her retirement, she worked part time with Dave at Capitol Safety, and also did tours at Red Wing Shoe Co. Shirley loved music and played in several bands with multiple family members and many friends.
She is survived by her husband Dave; two children, Sue (Kelly) Gillman of Ellsworth, Wis., and Chris Sommerfield of Otsego, Minn.; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; one brother, Lyle Jr. (Nolie) Stewart; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and nine siblings.
Service at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Frontenac, Minn., will be on Saturday April 5, 2025 at 11 a.m. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Celebration of life will follow at the Frontenac Sportsman’s Club at 12 p.m. with lunch provided. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to St. Jude’s or Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
