A growing effort to weave sleeping mats for the homeless

Nancy Zimmermann was attending a disabled veterans group meeting with her daughter when she saw someone demonstrate how to weave sleeping mats for homeless people from plastic shopping bags.
Woven tightly enough, the mats can provide insulation and a moisture barrier, she said, “qualities that (recipients) maybe can use to make their life easier.”
She thought it would be a fun project to do with her grandkids, so she made a frame. They worked on the mats over Christmas.
