Betty Barrett Obituary

Betty Mae Barrett, 90, of Surprise, Ariz., passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at About Seniors Assisted Living in Surprise.
    She was born in Sisseton, S.D. on June 27, 1926, to Ceylon and Veva (Varns) Taylor.  
    Betty moved to Minnesota at a young age and lived most of her life in Lake City.  Betty was married to Lawrence G. Miller on Sept. 22, 1945, until his death in 1982.  Betty was married to Kenneth Barrett on Oct. 11, 1986, until his death on Feb. 2, 2015.  Betty’s working career included working as a secretary for the local nursery before its closing and then she worked as a city clerk in Red Wing until her retirement.  Betty and Ken enjoyed square dancing.  After her retirement, Betty and Ken traveled extensively all across the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, and Europe.  Betty was active in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church singing in the choir.  Betty and Ken moved to Wittmann, Ariz. in May 2014 to be near family, but Lake City always remained Betty’s home.  Betty had numerous brothers and sisters, half brothers and half sisters, and stepbrothers and stepsisters, but said there was no distinction they were all her brothers and sisters.  
    Betty is survived by one half brother, Ron Varns of Mounds View, Minn.; two stepdaughter, Redessa Moreland of Wittmann, Ariz. and Lynette Coultas of Bellevue, Neb., two stepgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her husbands, Kenneth Barrett and Lawrence Miller and her parents.
    Funeral services will be Friday, June 30, at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Lake City with Rev. Barbara Mathias officiating. Burial will be at Lakewood Cemetery in Lake City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
