Eugene Alseson obituary

Eugene “Gene” H. Asleson, 89, of Lake City, Minnesota passed away on Monday, November 10, 2025, at Banner Ironwood Hospital in Queen Creek, Arizona. He was born May 29, 1936, in Lake City, Minnesota to Edgar and Agnes (Wiebusch) Asleson. He grew up in Lake City attending rural Wabasha Country School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1954. Gene served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam Era from October 15, 1961, to August 14, 1962. On June 29, 1968, he married the love of his life Beverly McGovern in Rochester, Minnesota.
Gene was employed as a millwright at the Tenant & Hoyt Flour Mill continuing to work through the sale of the Mill to Pillsbury and Cargill, he retired in 1998. He dedicated his life to service. As a proud Army Veteran and a retired Lake City firefighter, he spent his years protecting others. He often put himself in harm’s way so others could be safe. That courage wasn’t only while he was in uniform – it was also in the way he lived his everyday life with integrity and compassion.
When not serving his country or his community, you could find him outdoors – on the golf course or on the water fishing. Golf wasn’t just a hobby for him – it was his way of finding peace and sharing laughs with friends. Gene was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Lake City and the Lake City American Legion.
When wintering in Arizona for the last 25 years he was an avid card player, golfer, and hiker. He especially loved hiking in the Superstition Mountains and the Grand Canyon.
Gene knew the value of had work, loyalty, and love. He showed that true strength comes from kindness and that family is the greatest gift of all.
Gene is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Beverly Asleson of Lake City; two sons, Tim Asleson and Dale Asleson, both of Prescott, Wis.; a grandson, William Asleson of Fairbanks, Alaska; a sister, Elaine Mulder of Lake City; and two grand-dogs, Luna and Chardonnay. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Luverne and Harold, a sister, Janette, and sister-in-law, Earlene.
We celebrate the life of Gene Asleson. He was more than a husband and father, uncle, and cousin. He was a friend who touched the lives of many. Rest easy Gene. We love you and we’ll carry your spirit with us.
The memorial service for Gene will be held on Friday, November 21, at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lake City with Pastor Robb Robbert officiating. Friends and family may visit one hour prior to the service at the church. The burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston at 3 p.m. on Friday.
