Vicky Fick obituary

Vicky Meredith Fick, 82, carried her beloved Baby Lock sewing machine into heaven on October 3, 2025. She was born July 24, 1943, the second child of Harold and Bernice (Siewert) Schumacher.
Vicky attended a one-room schoolhouse and then graduated from Lake City Lincoln High School in 1961. A year later she graduated from the Daniel O’Brien School of Hair Design and Cosmetology.
She married the love of her life, Emery Fick, September 15, 1962, and moved just a few miles from her family farm to Emery’s family farm. Vicky was a lifelong homemaker, farmer, volunteer, educator and entrepreneur to name a few. She was an incredible cook and baker and was famous for her chocolate chip cookies. For many years Vicky cut hair in the kitchen for family, friends and neighbors; taught acrobat and baton lessons and many girls remember performing in parades as the Hiawatha High Steppers. She also had a successful interior painting and wallpapering business.
As an accomplished seamstress, she made everything from flower girl and prom dresses to elegant wedding gowns. Over time, her love for sewing expanded into quilting, and she made many, but was most known for her ‘quillows.’
In 1980, Vicky joined both the American National and Minnesota CattleWomen Associations where she held many officer positions and chaired multiple committees, with Education being her favorite. Over the years she connected with over 10,000 students across the state. Vicky was on the Minnesota Beef Council, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Board where she served on the executive, operating, and finance committees, and was the president of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 110 for 20 years. Together, Emery and Vicky were instrumental in starting the Flags of Valor along Lake Pepin.
She drove the County Veterans Van to the VA Medical Center, was a guardian on two Honor Flights to Washington, D.C., and an active member of Lincoln Trinity Lutheran Church.
While she enjoyed volunteering as a book buddy at Bluffview Elementary, her passion was helping students learn how to cook and sew in Angie Haviland’s Family Consumer Science class.
A few of her many accolades: 1989 Minnesota CattleWoman of the Year, 1999 Southeast Minnesota Ag Ambassador of the Year, 2005 American National CattleWoman of the Year, and Emery and Vicky were the 2017 Water Ski Days Grand Marshals.
Vicky’s grandchildren were the highlight of her life. She attended many ball games and track meets and loved taking them, along with other nieces and nephews, on mystery trips. Every grandchild was excited for the annual Easter treasure hunt, even though they knew the treasure they’d find was just a pair of socks.
For many years she had fun with the Oak Center Card Club, breakfast with her siblings and hosting the Schumacher Pseudo Sisters party. Walking in the woods and tending the flowers in her multiple gardens made her happy and she loved dancing with Emery to old-time country and western music.
Vicky is survived by her children: Connie (Dan “Chum” Weber), Kristi (Russ Huls), James (Lea), and Kendra (Brian Veronen). Grandchildren: Kayla, Whitney (fiancé Lynn Leiran) and Andrew (Kimee) Fick; Erin and William Huls; Austin, Ashley, Aiden and Alec Veronen. Great grandsons: Timothy and Axton. Siblings: Darlene Jones, Richard (Barb), Rollie, Randy (Doris), Becky, Loni Lemmerman (Larry), and Lori Meincke (Randy). Brother-in-law, Don Lamb and many nieces & nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Emery (2022); infant son, Jason (1973); parents Harold and Bernice; in-laws Lawrence and Hariett Fick; sisters-in-law Karen Schumacher, Mary Lamb, Arlene Fick, and Diane Siems-Lemke; brothers-in-law Jerold Jones, Gerald Fick, Ronald Siems, and Richard Lemke; and nieces Annie Schumacher and Karen Fick.
Visitations are Thursday, October 9, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Lake City and 9:30 a.m. on Friday, October 10, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lake City. The funeral service follows at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dan Riech officiating. Memorials are encouraged in lieu of flowers.
