Violet Holst Obituary

Violet Holst, 100, formerly of Lake City, passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016 at the Villa at St. Crispin Living Community.
    She was born Sept. 17, 1916 in Chester Township, Wabasha County to Charles and Alice (Duden) Holst. On Nov. 9, 1934 she married Alvin Holst at Lincoln Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Lake City. The couple farmed in Millville and Eyota areas until 1954. They moved to Plainview where Alvin operated Plainview Bus Service for 14 years. In 1969 they moved to Lake City where Violet worked at the Lake City Hospital until her retirement. Alvin died on Feb. 20, 1996. Violet was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lake City. She was a very determined and creative woman who loved making many different crafts and teddy bears. She was also a terrific cook and baker who could always figure out something to make with what she had. She enjoyed gardening and growing flowers.
    She is survived by her sons, Roger of Chatfield and Ronald (Kim) of Lake City; daughters, Phyllis Nickelsen of Yuma, Ariz., Yvonne Loll of Hager City, Gayle Holst of Sand Prairie, and Cheryl Holst of Red Wing; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Evelyn Freiheit of Red Wing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin and one grandson Richard Koepsell.
    Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lake City with Rev. John Berg officiating. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel in Lake City and for one hour prior to the service at church on Tuesday. Burial will take place 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. Online condolences can be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
