Local Lore: Jewell Nursery was once nation’s largest
Lake City’s Jewell Nursery Co. was founded in 1868 by Dr. Phineas A. Jewell (1825-1878), who graduated as a physician from Ann Arbor University and served in the Civil War as a surgeon for the Federal Army before turning to an outdoor trade. He gained experience in horticulture by organizing a grafting crew and traversing the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois reinvigorating apple orchards. He married fellow doctor Catherine Underwood on Aug. 20, 1863, and once settlers began moving into Minnesota, Dr. Jewell saw the perfect opportunity to establish his own nursery.
