Once a year, they come to Hok-Si-La Park in Lake City, to build kayaks, to paddle kayaks, to roll kayaks, to harpoon from kayaks, to burn kayaks, but most of all to celebrate a culture and its way of life.
Qajaq Camp (pronounced “kayak camp”) is put on by Qajaq USA, the American Chapter of the Greenland Kayak Association.
About 32 campers arrived May 17 to learn from one another and develop seal hunting skills that for natives in Greenland were (and in some cases still are) a means of survival.
