Racing thrills return to Johnny Appleseed fest

Many years ago, the brave and foolhardy would don costumes, take a plunger in each hand and plunge with all their might to propel a toilet on casters down the street.

The so-called “Johnny races” are history, but Lake City Cub Scout Pack 94 is reviving some of the racing spirit at this year’s event by hosting a pinewood derby in Patton Park.

Everyone is invited to make homemade pinewood race cars from a kit and race them at this year’s festival on Oct. 7.
