Windbreaks can protect soil, the environment
Windbreaks or shelterbelts are single or multiple rows of trees or shrubs in linear configurations. They provide many benefits to improve farmlands which are exposed to strong winds.
According to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) the purpose of windbreaks is to:
• Reduce soil erosion from wind
• Protect plants from wind related damage
• Alter the microenvironment for enhancing plant growth
• Manage snow deposition
• Provide shelter for structures, animals, and people
