Barge breaks through lake ice to kick off commercial navigation season

Monday was an exciting day for riverwatchers as multiple tows pushing barges appeared on Lake Pepin for the first time this season.

The Motor Vessel W. Red Harris was breaking its way through the ice of Lake Pepin Monday to become the first boat to kick off the unofficial start of the 2022 navigation season on the Upper Mississippi River, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The W. Red Harris has passed Motor Vessel Aubrey B. Harwell.
