Corrected: ‘Safe Routes’ get a try-out

Two temporary traffic changes are now in place along South Prairie Street in Lake City as part of a Minnesota Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School demonstration project.

At the intersection of Prairie Street and Lakewood Avenue, bollards, red paint, and reflective tape create a pedestrian refuge that extends into Lakewood Avenue leaving room for vehicles to pass going either direction. The effect is reminiscent of the bump-outs on Lakeshore Drive at Center Street that reduce the distance pedestrians must travel to cross the street.
