Lake ice thick and blue
The first ice thickness measurements by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in two years showed Lake Pepin ice to be up to 20 inches thick in places and predominantly blue.
Blue, or clear, ice is denser and slower to melt than its white counterpart, which contains air bubbles that give it its lighter color.
Lake Pepin ice thickness measurements typically start in mid-February and are conducted on a weekly basis. Measurements are reported from each mile on the Upper Mississippi River between mile 765 and 786.
