Study could slow the decline of Lake City's ash trees

The City of Lake City is participating in a study to see if the concept of herd immunity can be used to slow the spread of emerald ash borer.

As part of the study, about 200 ash trees in Lake City were marked with metal tags. Some were treated, some weren’t.

Brian Aukema is a forest insect scientist at the University of Minnesota, which received a grant to conduct the study.

He said the study is intended to investigate anecdotal reports of untreated trees that escaped infestation, apparently due to their proximity to treated trees.
