Close Calls - Part II

In the winter when transferring the compressed and matted hay from the haystack in the field to the feed lot hay rack, it was necessary to use a stack saw or hay knife. A person would grip its two handles to saw a 12 inch to 18 inch deep cut across the hard packed hay. It was a strenuous job. There was also one called a hay spade that you would step on to push the cutting sickles into the hay. Then using pitchforks, it could be torn from the stack and loaded. Dad had a better idea. He removed the snow scoop from the tractor and mounted the forked manure attachment.
