Track and field Howie Cook designed now bears his name

When a voter-approved referendum funded upgrades to the Lake City High School track and field complex at the corner of Iowa Street and Garden Street, Coach Howie Cook took inspiration from the best college facilities for the new design.

“So at one time we had the premier track, and it’s as good as any still,” he said.

It’s vastly different from the cinder track the school had when he began coaching cross country and track and field in Lake City 50 years ago.
